چکیده

In previous investigations, we have demonstrated that: 1) motor unit discharge rate during maximal voluntary effort is greater in young adults than in older persons, though motor unit discharge rate at 50% of maximal effort is similar in these two groups (Kamen et al., 1995), 2) motor unit discharge rates at submaximal forces declines as a result of resistance exercise training in young and older adults (Patten et al., 2000), and 3) maximal motor unit discharge rate frequently increases following exercise training (Patten et al., 2001). However, these investigations were conducted in small muscles of the hand. In a crosssectional experimental design involving m. rectus femoris, we have determined that maximal motor unit discharge rate is greater in elderly individuals accustomed to many years of resistance exercise, than in physically active elders (Leong et al., 1999). The present study was conducted to determine whether young and older adults would exhibit differences in motor unit discharge rate at 50% MVC in a larger muscle, and whether submaximal discharge rate would change during exercise training.

Reduced motor unit discharge rates of maximal velocity dynamic contractions in response to a submaximal dynamic fatigue protocol.

Fatigability is highly task dependent wherein motor unit (MU) discharge rates and recruitment thresholds are affected differently depending on whether contractions are performed at maximal or submaximal intensities. Although much is described for isometric tasks, the behavior of MU properties during the production of maximal velocity dynamic contractions following submaximal fatiguing contracti...

Training-related adaptations in motor unit discharge rate in young and older adults.

BACKGROUND This study evaluated changes in motor unit (MU) firing rates in young and older adults during exercise training. METHODS Vastus lateralis MU discharge rates were measured in 8 young and 7 older adults. Each participant performed isometric knee extension contractions at 10%, 50%, and 100% of maximal voluntary contraction or effort (MVC) on two separate occasions. Participants then c...

Age-related decline in rate of torque development is accompanied by lower maximal motor unit discharge frequency during fast contractions.

The aim of this study was to investigate the association between the rate of torque development and maximal motor unit discharge frequency in young and elderly adults as they performed rapid submaximal contractions with the ankle dorsiflexors. Recordings were obtained of the torque exerted by the dorsiflexors during the isometric contractions and the surface and intramuscular electromyograms (E...

Steadiness is reduced and motor unit discharge is more variable in old adults.

The purpose of this study was to compare the steadiness and discharge rate of motor units during submaximal contractions performed by young and old adults. Subjects performed isometric and slow shortening and lengthening contractions with the first dorsal interosseous muscle. The steadiness of the isometric and slow anisometric contractions was less for the old subjects compared with young subj...

Muscle vibration sustains motor unit firing rate during submaximal isometric fatigue in humans.

1. In keeping with the 'muscular wisdom hypothesis', many studies have documented that the firing rate of the majority of motor units decreased during fatiguing isometric contractions. The present study investigated whether the application of periodic muscle vibration, which strongly activates muscle spindles, would alter the modulation of motor unit firing rate during submaximal fatiguing isom...
